The symmetric group S3

Example

The symmetric group S3S_3 has the six elements ee, (1 2)(1\ 2), (1 3)(1\ 3), (2 3)(2\ 3), (1 2 3)(1\ 2\ 3) and (1 3 2)(1\ 3\ 2). It is isomorphic to the dihedral group D3D_3 of the symmetries of an equilateral triangle, when you number the vertices 11, 22, 33. The 33-cycles are the rotations, and the transpositions are the reflections. It is not abelian, because (1 2)(2 3)=(1 2 3)(1\ 2)(2\ 3) = (1\ 2\ 3) but (2 3)(1 2)=(1 3 2)(2\ 3)(1\ 2) = (1\ 3\ 2). Thus S3S_3 is the smallest group that is not abelian. Its conjugacy classes are {e}\{e\}, the three transpositions, and the two 33-cycles. Its subgroups are {e}\{e\}, three subgroups of order 22, the alternating group A3A_3 of order 33, and S3S_3. Only {e}\{e\}, A3A_3 and S3S_3 are normal.

What this node needs for W3
  • a person confirmed each agent-written section: rule P04 (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 10 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
