Statement

Let GG be a group and let HH be a subset of GG. Then HH is a subgroup of GG if and only if HH is not empty and ab−1∈Hab^{-1} \in H for all a,b∈Ha, b \in H.

Remarks

If a∈Ha \in H, then e=aa−1∈He = aa^{-1} \in H, then b−1=eb−1∈Hb^{-1} = eb^{-1} \in H for b∈Hb \in H, and then ab=a(b−1)−1∈Hab = a(b^{-1})^{-1} \in H. In additive notation, the condition is a−b∈Ha - b \in H for all a,b∈Ha, b \in H. For a finite nonempty subset HH, it is sufficient that ab∈Hab \in H for all a,b∈Ha, b \in H.

This test replaces three checks by one. You only check that the subset is not empty and that ab−1ab^{-1} stays in the subset. For example, the multiples of 55 form a subgroup of (Z,+)(\mathbb{Z}, +), because the difference of two multiples of 55 is a multiple of 55.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

50 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
