Lower central series

Definition

Let GG be a group. For subgroups HH and KK of GG, let [H,K][H, K] be the subgroup generated by the commutators [h,k][h, k] with h∈Hh \in H and k∈Kk \in K. The lower central series of GG is the sequence γ1(G)=G\gamma_1(G) = G and γi+1(G)=[γi(G),G]\gamma_{i+1}(G) = [\gamma_i(G), G] for i≥1i \geq 1.

Remarks

The second term γ2(G)=[G,G]\gamma_2(G) = [G, G] is the commutator subgroup. Each γi(G)\gamma_i(G) is normal in GG, and γi(G)/γi+1(G)\gamma_i(G)/\gamma_{i+1}(G) lies in the centre of G/γi+1(G)G/\gamma_{i+1}(G). The terms of the derived series satisfy G(i)⊆γi+1(G)G^{(i)} \subseteq \gamma_{i+1}(G). For S3S_3, the series is S3⊇A3⊇A3⊇⋯S_3 \supseteq A_3 \supseteq A_3 \supseteq \cdots, so it never reaches {e}\{e\}.

Explanations

L1 human

The lower central series starts with the whole group. At each step, it takes the commutators of the last term with all elements of the group. If this process reaches the identity, the group is nilpotent.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
