Derived series

Definition

Let GG be a group. The derived series of GG is the sequence of subgroups G(0)=GG^{(0)} = G and G(i+1)=[G(i),G(i)]G^{(i+1)} = [G^{(i)}, G^{(i)}] for i≥0i \geq 0. Here [H,H][H, H] is the commutator subgroup of HH.

Remarks

Each G(i)G^{(i)} is a characteristic subgroup of GG, and G(i)/G(i+1)G^{(i)} / G^{(i+1)} is abelian. The group GG is solvable if and only if G(n)={e}G^{(n)} = \{e\} for some nn, and the least such nn is the derived length. For S4S_4, the derived series is S4⊇A4⊇V⊇{e}S_4 \supseteq A_4 \supseteq V \supseteq \{e\}. For n≥5n \geq 5, the derived series of SnS_n is Sn⊇An⊇An⊇⋯S_n \supseteq A_n \supseteq A_n \supseteq \cdots, so it never reaches {e}\{e\}.

Explanations

L1 human

Each step of the derived series takes the commutator subgroup of the last step. So each step removes an abelian layer from the group. If you reach the identity, the group is solvable.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
