definition

Abelianisation

Definition

Let GG be a group and let [G,G][G, G] be its commutator subgroup. The abelianisation of GG is the quotient group Gab=G/[G,G]G^{\mathrm{ab}} = G/[G, G].

Remarks

The group GabG^{\mathrm{ab}} is abelian, by this criterion. If GG is abelian, then Gab=GG^{\mathrm{ab}} = G. The abelianisation of the symmetric group SnS_n for n≥2n \geq 2 is cyclic of order 22, and the sign of a permutation gives the isomorphism.

Explanations

L1 human

The abelianisation forces all elements of a group to commute, and changes nothing more than it must. It keeps as much information about the group as an abelian group can keep. For a group that is already abelian, it does nothing.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 15 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
