Group action
Definition
Let be a group with identity , and let be a set. A (left) action of on is a map , , with these two properties:
- for each .
- for all and .
Remarks
For each , the map is a bijection of , with inverse . The map that sends to this bijection is a group homomorphism from to the symmetric group . Conversely, each homomorphism gives an action of on . A right action is a map with and .
Explanations
L1 human
A group action lets the elements of a group move the points of a set. The identity does not move any point, and moving by and then by is the same as moving by . For example, the rotations of a square move the four corners of the square.
