definition

Faithful action

Definition

Let a group GG act on a set XX. The action is faithful when, for each g∈Gg \in G, g⋅x=xg \cdot x = x for all x∈Xx \in X implies g=eg = e.

Remarks

The action is faithful if and only if the associated homomorphism G→Sym⁡(X)G \to \operatorname{Sym}(X) is injective. So a faithful action identifies GG with a subgroup of Sym⁡(X)\operatorname{Sym}(X). The action of GG on itself by conjugation is faithful if and only if the centre of GG is trivial.

Explanations

L1 human

In a faithful action, each element of the group that is not the identity moves at least one point. So you can tell the group elements apart by watching how they move the points. The group is then a group of permutations of the set.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
