Conjugacy class

Definition

Let GG be a group and let a∈Ga \in G. The conjugacy class of aa is the set Cl⁡(a)={gag−1:g∈G}\operatorname{Cl}(a) = \{gag^{-1} : g \in G\}.

Remarks

The conjugacy classes are the equivalence classes of the relation "is conjugate to", so they partition GG. They are the orbits of the action by conjugation. The class of aa is {a}\{a\} if and only if aa lies in the centre of GG. In the symmetric group SnS_n, the conjugacy classes are given by the cycle types.

Explanations

L1 human

The conjugacy class of an element collects all the elements that look like it after a renaming by conjugation. In an abelian group, each element is alone in its class. In S3S_3, the three transpositions form one class, and the two 33-cycles form another class.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 8 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
