Order of a group

Definition

Let GG be a group. The order of GG, written ∣G∣|G|, is the cardinality of the underlying set of GG. When GG is finite, ∣G∣|G| is the number of elements of GG. When GG is infinite, GG has infinite order.

Remarks

The trivial group has order 11, and the group of nnth roots of unity has order nn. The group (Z,+)(\mathbb{Z}, +) has infinite order. Lagrange's theorem says that the order of a subgroup of a finite group divides the order of the group.

Explanations

L1 human

The order of a group tells you how big the group is. For example, the rotations of a square that map the square to itself form a group of order 44. The word "order" has a second meaning in group theory: the order of an element.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Group concept
  2. Order of a group definition

What depends on this

30 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
