Proof
We prove the contrapositive: if is not prime, then is not prime.
- Let be a natural number that is not a prime number. Then , , or is composite.
- If , then . If , then . Neither nor is prime.
- Let be composite. Then with integers and such that and .
- For every number and every integer , . Indeed, the product telescopes: .
- Put . Then , where is a positive integer.
- So divides .
- Since , we have .
- So has a divisor strictly between and itself, and it is not prime.
- By contraposition, if is prime, then is prime.
Idea
If , then , and always divides . This gives a proper factor of . So a composite exponent never gives a prime.
