Proof that isometries are injective
Builds on Metric spaceIsometryInjective function
Proof
- Let and be metric spaces and let be an isometry.
- Let with .
- A metric is on equal points, so .
- Since is an isometry, .
- By the axiom of a metric, would give . This contradicts step 4, so .
- Thus implies , and is injective.
Idea
Distinct points have positive distance, and an isometry keeps distances. So the images of distinct points also have positive distance, and they are distinct.
