Proof that the chromatic number of a complete bipartite graph is 2

Proof
We show that is -colourable but not -colourable.
- Let . Let the complete bipartite graph have vertex set , where and .
- Define for and for .
- Every edge joins a vertex of to a vertex of , so its ends get the different colours and . Hence is a colouring, and is -colourable.
- Since , there are vertices and , and they are adjacent.
- A colouring with colours in would give and the same colour . So is not -colourable.
- A colouring with colours in the empty set exists only when there are no vertices. Since has vertices, it is not -colourable.
- By Steps 3, 5 and 6, the smallest such that is -colourable is . So the chromatic number of is .
Idea
The two parts give a colouring with two colours, because all edges go between the parts. One colour is not enough, because the graph has an edge, and the two ends of an edge need different colours.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
