Ordinary differential equations Proof
Proof that time translates of solutions of an autonomous system are solutions
Builds on Autonomous systemSolution of an ordinary differential equation
Proof
We compute the derivative of from its difference quotients.
- The set is an interval, since it is the image of the interval under the shift .
- For we have . So is defined, and because takes values in .
- Fix . For each real with , we have .
- As , the right side tends to , because is differentiable at . Here the admissible are the same on both sides, so one-sided derivatives at endpoints also match.
- So is differentiable at and .
- Since is a solution of the autonomous system, .
- Hence for each , and is a solution of on .
Idea
The right side does not depend on time. Shifting the time variable does not change the derivative of a curve, so the shifted curve still has velocity at its own position.
