Manifolds and cell complexes Knot theory Theorem
Property P conjecture
Builds on KnotDehn surgery
Statement
Let be a tame knot that is not the unknot. Let be a slope other than , and let be the result of Dehn surgery on with slope . Then is not simply connected.
Remarks
The homology of is , or when , so it is nontrivial unless . The content of the theorem is therefore about the slopes . Kronheimer and Mrowka proved it in 2004 using instanton Floer homology and work on taut foliations and contact structures. With the Poincaré conjecture, proved by Perelman, it also follows from the Gordon–Luecke result that a nontrivial surgery on a nontrivial knot never gives . The hypothesis that is knotted is needed: surgery on the unknot gives . Example: surgery on the right-handed trefoil gives the Poincaré homology sphere, up to orientation, which has the same homology as but a fundamental group of order .

For a student
By the Lickorish–Wallace theorem every closed orientable -manifold arises by surgery on a link, so it is natural to ask what surgery on a single knot can produce. Property P says that, apart from the slope which gives back , it never produces a fake or real -sphere. It implies the key step of the Gordon–Luecke theorem, that nontrivial surgery on a nontrivial knot never gives . Conversely, that step together with the Poincaré conjecture implies Property P. The proof by Kronheimer and Mrowka shows that the fundamental group of has a nontrivial representation into .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
