Partial differential equations Definition
Pseudo-differential operator
Definition
Let and , and let be a symbol of order in the symbol class . For in the Schwartz space , let be its Fourier transform. The pseudo-differential operator with symbol is the operator given by An operator of this form is a pseudo-differential operator of order , and the set of them is denoted .
Remarks
Example: let with and coefficients smooth and bounded with all their derivatives. By Fourier inversion, , so with .
Non-example: the operator , a Schrödinger evolution operator, is not a pseudo-differential operator of any order. The symbol of an operator of this form is determined by the operator, here , and it is in no class .
The composition of with and with is with , and . Operators of order are bounded on , and operators of order are smoothing. The same formula with a symbol in defines the larger classes .
