Definition

Let Ω⊂ℂ\Omega \subset \C be a domain. A generating pair on Ω\Omega is a pair (F,G)(F, G) of Hölder continuous functions Ω→ℂ\Omega \to \C with Im⁡(F(z)‾ G(z))>0\operatorname{Im}\left( \overline{F(z)}\, G(z) \right) > 0 for all z∈Ωz \in \Omega. Then every function w ⁣:Ω→ℂw \colon \Omega \to \C can be written uniquely as w=φF+ψGw = \varphi F + \psi G with φ,ψ ⁣:Ω→ℝ\varphi, \psi \colon \Omega \to \R. The function ww is (F,G)(F, G)-pseudoanalytic if φ\varphi and ψ\psi have continuous first partial derivatives and φzˉ F+ψzˉ G=0on Ω,\varphi_{\bar z}\, F + \psi_{\bar z}\, G = 0 \quad \text{on } \Omega, where ∂zˉ=12(∂x+i∂y)\partial_{\bar z} = \frac{1}{2}\left( \partial_x + i \partial_y \right) is the Wirtinger derivative.

Remarks

The condition Im⁡(FˉG)>0\operatorname{Im}(\bar F G) > 0 says that F(z)F(z) and G(z)G(z) are linearly independent over ℝ\R, which gives the uniqueness of φ\varphi and ψ\psi.

Example: for (F,G)=(1,i)(F, G) = (1, i), the condition reads (φ+iψ)zˉ=0(\varphi + i \psi)_{\bar z} = 0. So the (1,i)(1, i)-pseudoanalytic functions are exactly the holomorphic functions with continuous derivative.

Non-example: w(z)=zˉw(z) = \bar z is not (1,i)(1, i)-pseudoanalytic. Here φ=x\varphi = x and ψ=−y\psi = -y, so φzˉ+iψzˉ=12+i⋅(−i2)=1≠0\varphi_{\bar z} + i \psi_{\bar z} = \frac{1}{2} + i \cdot \left( -\frac{i}{2} \right) = 1 \ne 0.

If FF and GG are continuously differentiable, then wzˉ=φFzˉ+ψGzˉw_{\bar z} = \varphi F_{\bar z} + \psi G_{\bar z} for a pseudoanalytic ww. Since φ\varphi and ψ\psi are real-linear in ww, this is an equation wzˉ=aw+bwˉw_{\bar z} = a w + b \bar w with coefficients a,ba, b determined by FF and GG. Some authors ask for less regularity of φ\varphi and ψ\psi and use a weak form of the condition.
