Pseudocomplement

Builds on Lattice

Definition

Let LL be a lattice with a least element 00, and let a∈La \in L. An element a∗∈La^* \in L is a pseudocomplement of aa if for every x∈Lx \in L, a∧x=0  ⟺  x≤a∗.a \wedge x = 0 \iff x \le a^*. The lattice LL is pseudocomplemented if every element has a pseudocomplement.

Remarks

Equivalently, a∗a^* is the greatest element of the set {x∈L:a∧x=0}\set{x \in L : a \wedge x = 0}, so it is unique when it exists. In a pseudocomplemented lattice, a≤a∗∗a \le a^{**} and a∗∗∗=a∗a^{***} = a^* for all aa.

Example: the open sets of a topological space XX, ordered by inclusion. For an open set UU, put U∗=int⁡(X∖U)U^* = \operatorname{int}(X \setminus U). An open set VV satisfies U∩V=∅U \cap V = \emptyset exactly when V⊆X∖UV \subseteq X \setminus U, that is, when V⊆int⁡(X∖U)V \subseteq \operatorname{int}(X \setminus U), since VV is open.

Non-example: in the diamond lattice M3M_3 with atoms p,q,rp, q, r, the element pp has no pseudocomplement. The elements xx with p∧x=0p \wedge x = 0 are 00, qq and rr, and this set has no greatest element, since q∨r=1q \vee r = 1 and p∧1=p≠0p \wedge 1 = p \ne 0.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
