Pullback
Builds on CategoryMorphismLimitProductEqualizerPreimage of a set
Definition
Let be a category and let and be morphisms of . A pullback of and is an object with morphisms and such that:
- ;
- for every object and all morphisms and with , there is exactly one morphism with and .
The object is written and called the fibre product of and over .
Remarks
A pullback is the limit of the diagram , so it is unique up to unique isomorphism. If the product exists, the pullback is the equalizer of and .
Example: in the category of sets, let with the two coordinate maps. Clause 1 holds by the choice of . Given with , the map lands in and is the only map with the required coordinates. When is the inclusion of a subset , the pullback is the preimage with its inclusion into .
Non-example: in the category of sets, let , and let be the constant maps. The set with satisfies clause 1, but the pair , on admits no with and , so clause 2 fails.
