Pythagorean field
Definition
Let be a field. The field is Pythagorean if for all there is with .
Remarks
By induction on the number of terms, every finite sum of squares in a Pythagorean field is a square. Example: is Pythagorean, since has the real square root . More generally, every real closed field and every algebraically closed field is Pythagorean. Non-example: is not Pythagorean, because is not the square of a rational number. Non-example: is not Pythagorean, because and the squares in are and .
