Definition

Let ℋ\mathcal{H} be a complex Hilbert space and let 𝒯(ℋ)\mathcal{T}(\mathcal{H}) be the space of trace class operators with the trace norm ∥⋅∥1\norm{\cdot}_1. A quantum dynamical semigroup on ℋ\mathcal{H}, in the Schrödinger picture, is a family (Tt)t≥0(T_t)_{t \ge 0} of linear maps Tt ⁣:𝒯(ℋ)→𝒯(ℋ)T_t \colon \mathcal{T}(\mathcal{H}) \to \mathcal{T}(\mathcal{H}) such that:

  1. each TtT_t is a quantum channel, that is, completely positive and trace-preserving;
  2. T0=id⁡T_0 = \id and Ts+t=Ts∘TtT_{s+t} = T_s \circ T_t for all s,t≥0s, t \ge 0;
  3. ∥Tt(ρ)−ρ∥1→0\norm{T_t(\rho) - \rho}_1 \to 0 as t→0+t \to 0^+, for every ρ∈𝒯(ℋ)\rho \in \mathcal{T}(\mathcal{H}).

Clauses 2 and 3 say that (Tt)(T_t) is a C0-semigroup on 𝒯(ℋ)\mathcal{T}(\mathcal{H}). In the Heisenberg picture one uses instead the adjoint maps on bounded operators. These are unital, completely positive and normal, and continuous in the weak* topology.

Remarks

Example: on ℂ2\C^2 with γ>0\gamma > 0, let Tt(ρ)=1+e−γt2ρ+1−e−γt2ZρZT_t(\rho) = \tfrac{1 + e^{-\gamma t}}{2}\rho + \tfrac{1 - e^{-\gamma t}}{2} Z\rho Z, where Z=diag⁡(1,−1)Z = \operatorname{diag}(1, -1). Each TtT_t is a mixture of the unitary conjugations by II and ZZ, so it is a channel. It keeps the diagonal of ρ\rho and multiplies the off-diagonal entries by e−γte^{-\gamma t}. Since e−γse−γt=e−γ(s+t)e^{-\gamma s}e^{-\gamma t} = e^{-\gamma(s+t)} and Tt(ρ)→ρT_t(\rho) \to \rho as t→0+t \to 0^+, clauses 2 and 3 hold. Non-example: the channels St(ρ)=1+cos⁡t2ρ+1−cos⁡t2ZρZS_t(\rho) = \tfrac{1 + \cos t}{2}\rho + \tfrac{1 - \cos t}{2}Z\rho Z satisfy S0=id⁡S_0 = \id and multiply the off-diagonal entries by cos⁡t\cos t. Then Sπ/2∘Sπ/2S_{\pi/2} \circ S_{\pi/2} multiplies them by 00 while SπS_\pi multiplies them by −1-1, so clause 2 fails. When ℋ\mathcal{H} is finite-dimensional, Tt=etℒT_t = e^{t\mathcal{L}} for a generator ℒ\mathcal{L}, and the Gorini–Kossakowski–Sudarshan–Lindblad theorem gives the possible forms of ℒ\mathcal{L}.
