Definition
Let be a finite-dimensional complex semisimple Lie algebra with Cartan matrix . Let be positive integers with for all . Let be nonzero and not a root of unity, and put . For an integer put , , and . The quantum enveloping algebra is the -algebra with generators for and relations:
- and .
- and .
- .
- For , with : , and the same relation with every replaced by .
It is a Hopf algebra with , and .
Remarks
Example: for the Cartan matrix is , , and there is no relation 4. So is generated by with , and . Non-example: the value is excluded, since the denominator in relation 3 vanishes. The classical universal enveloping algebra is recovered only through a limit, or through a version over formal power series in with . Sign and normalization conventions differ between textbooks; the coproduct is sometimes replaced by its opposite.
