Example
Let be a mass, an angular frequency and the reduced Planck constant. The quantum harmonic oscillator is the Schrödinger operator on . Its spectrum is purely discrete, and its eigenvalues are each of multiplicity one. With , an eigenfunction for is , where is the -th Hermite polynomial. Up to normalisation these are the Hermite functions, and they form an orthonormal basis of after normalisation.
Check for : with one has . So . Since , the terms in cancel, and .
Remarks
The annihilation operator and its adjoint satisfy and . From these relations alone, raises the energy by and lowers it, which gives the whole spectrum. The levels are equally spaced, unlike those of most other potentials. The ground state energy is positive, in contrast with the classical harmonic oscillator, whose minimum energy is .
