Quantum phase transition

Definition
Let be finite sets of sites with , and let for a fixed . Let be an open interval. For , let be a self-adjoint operator on that is a sum of uniformly bounded local terms depending analytically on . Let be the smallest eigenvalue of , and assume that the ground-state energy density exists for all . The family has a quantum phase transition at if is not real-analytic at .
Remarks
The limit is the zero-temperature version of the thermodynamic limit, and plays the role of the free energy density. At a continuous quantum phase transition the gap between the two lowest eigenvalues of tends to as .
Example: the transverse-field Ising chain on a ring of sites, with and . The Jordan–Wigner transformation maps it to free fermions with energies . This gives , which is not analytic at . The gap closes exactly there. Check of the formula at : , the energy per bond of the two aligned ground states.
Non-example: for has , which is analytic, so there is no transition.
