Quantum phase transition
Summary
A quantum phase transition is a sudden change of the ground state of a quantum many-body system as a parameter of its Hamiltonian is varied. It happens at zero temperature. It is driven by quantum fluctuations instead of thermal ones. At the transition the ground-state energy density is not analytic, and at a continuous transition the energy gap above the ground state closes. The transverse-field Ising model is the standard example.
