Transverse-field Ising model
Builds on Lattice modelIsing modelTensor product of Hilbert spacesQuantum phase transitionJordan–Wigner transformation
Example
Let and let be the tensor product space of spins . Let be the Pauli matrices acting on site , with . For and , the transverse-field Ising chain is the lattice model with Hamiltonian The first term is the Ising model coupling and the second is a magnetic field perpendicular to the Ising axis. Check at the two ends. For the ground states are the two aligned states and , with energy . For the unique ground state has every spin in the eigenstate of , with energy .
Remarks
The two terms do not commute, so the model is genuinely quantum even though it is built from Ising variables. The Jordan–Wigner transformation maps it to free fermions, which was done by Pfeuty (1970); the single-particle energies are . The gap closes at , which is a quantum phase transition between a ferromagnetically ordered phase for and a paramagnetic phase for . The chain is dual to itself under the Kramers–Wannier map, which exchanges and and so explains why the transition sits at . The -dimensional quantum model is related to the classical Ising model in dimensions through the transfer matrix.
