Definition
Let be a finite-dimensional complex Hilbert space, and let and be density matrices on . The support of a positive semidefinite operator is the orthogonal complement of its kernel. The quantum relative entropy of with respect to is if the support of is contained in the support of . Otherwise . Here is the trace, and is the matrix logarithm of on its support.
Remarks
Example: for with , one has . So , where is the von Neumann entropy.
Non-example of finiteness: for and on , the support of is not contained in that of , so .
If and commute, they are diagonal in a common basis with eigenvalues and . Then , the Kullback–Leibler divergence of the two distributions.
Klein's inequality gives , with equality exactly when . For every quantum channel , ; this is the monotonicity, or data processing inequality.
