Quasicircle
Builds on Quasiconformal mappingCircle
Definition
Let and let be the unit circle. A subset of is a -quasicircle if for some -quasiconformal mapping . It is a quasicircle if it is a -quasicircle for some .
Remarks
Every quasicircle is a bounded Jordan curve, since is a homeomorphism. Example: an ellipse with semi-axes is the image of under the real-linear map , which is -quasiconformal with ; so an ellipse is a quasicircle. Ahlfors' three-point condition gives an equivalent form. A bounded Jordan curve is a quasicircle if and only if there is a constant with the following property. For any two points , the arc of of smaller diameter between them has diameter at most . Non-example: the cardioid has a cusp at . Take the two points of the cardioid at angles near the cusp. Their distance is of order , while the arc between them through the cusp has diameter of order . So the three-point condition fails, and the cardioid is not a quasicircle. Every Jordan curve and the Koch snowflake are quasicircles.
