Functions of a complex variable Definition
Quasiconformal mapping
Definition
Let and be open sets in and let . Write and for the Wirtinger derivatives of a function , where and are its partial derivatives. A map is -quasiconformal if:
- is an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of onto .
- has locally square-integrable weak first partial derivatives on , that is, lies in the Sobolev space .
- almost everywhere on , where .
A map is quasiconformal if it is -quasiconformal for some .
Remarks
Example: for , the real-linear map has and . Its Jacobian determinant is , so it is an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of , and it is -quasiconformal with . It maps the unit circle onto an ellipse with axis ratio . Non-example: complex conjugation is a homeomorphism, but and , so clause 3 fails for every ; it reverses orientation. The quotient is the complex dilatation of , and is its maximal dilatation. A map is -quasiconformal if and only if it is conformal. An equivalent geometric definition uses the moduli of quadrilaterals or annuli: is -quasiconformal when it distorts each conformal modulus by a factor of at most .
