Definition

Work in units with c=ℏ=1c = \hbar = 1 and with metric signature (−,+,+,+)(-,+,+,+). Let gg be a spacetime metric with scalar curvature RR, let GG be Newton's constant, and let V ⁣:ℝ→ℝV \colon \R \to \R be a smooth function, called the potential. A quintessence field is a real scalar field ϕ\phi with the following action, which couples it minimally to gravity: S=∫[R16πG−12gμν∂μϕ ∂νϕ−V(ϕ)]−det⁡g  d4x+Sm.S = \int \left[ \frac{R}{16 \pi G} - \frac{1}{2} g^{\mu\nu} \partial_\mu \phi\, \partial_\nu \phi - V(\phi) \right] \sqrt{-\det g}\; d^4x + S_{\mathrm{m}}. Here SmS_{\mathrm{m}} is the action of the other matter, and it does not depend on ϕ\phi. Take a spatially flat Friedmann–Lemaître–Robertson–Walker background with scale factor a(t)a(t) and Hubble rate H=a˙/aH = \dot a / a. A homogeneous field ϕ(t)\phi(t) on it has energy density and pressure ρϕ=12ϕ˙2+V(ϕ),pϕ=12ϕ˙2−V(ϕ),\rho_\phi = \tfrac{1}{2} \dot\phi^2 + V(\phi), \qquad p_\phi = \tfrac{1}{2} \dot\phi^2 - V(\phi), and it obeys ϕ¨+3Hϕ˙+V′(ϕ)=0.\ddot \phi + 3 H \dot \phi + V'(\phi) = 0. Its equation of state parameter is wϕ=pϕ/ρϕw_\phi = p_\phi / \rho_\phi. Quintessence is the use of such a field as the dark energy of the universe.

Remarks

The equation for ϕ\phi is the Klein–Gordon equation with a potential and with the friction term 3Hϕ˙3H\dot\phi from the expansion. If V≥0V \ge 0 and ρϕ>0\rho_\phi > 0, then −1≤wϕ≤1-1 \le w_\phi \le 1, with wϕ=−1w_\phi = -1 exactly when ϕ˙=0\dot\phi = 0. Example: for a constant potential V=V0>0V = V_0 > 0 and a field at rest, ρϕ=V0\rho_\phi = V_0 and pϕ=−V0p_\phi = -V_0, so wϕ=−1w_\phi = -1 and the field acts as a cosmological constant Λ=8πGV0\Lambda = 8 \pi G V_0. Non-example: a field with V=0V = 0 has ρϕ=pϕ=12ϕ˙2\rho_\phi = p_\phi = \tfrac{1}{2}\dot\phi^2, so wϕ=1w_\phi = 1; by the Friedmann equations it decelerates the expansion and cannot serve as dark energy, which needs w<−1/3w < -1/3. Common choices of potential are inverse powers V(ϕ)=M4+αϕ−αV(\phi) = M^{4 + \alpha} \phi^{-\alpha} with α>0\alpha > 0 and exponentials V(ϕ)=V0e−λϕV(\phi) = V_0 e^{-\lambda \phi}, where MM, V0V_0 and λ\lambda are positive constants.
