Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring. An ideal II of RR is a radical ideal if I=II = \sqrt{I}, where I\sqrt{I} is the radical of II. Equivalently, for all r∈Rr \in R and all integers n≥1n \ge 1, if rn∈Ir^n \in I then r∈Ir \in I.

Remarks

Example: 6ℤ6\Z is a radical ideal of ℤ\Z; if 66 divides rnr^n, then 22 and 33 divide rr, so 66 divides rr. Non-example: 12ℤ12\Z is not radical, since 62∈12ℤ6^2 \in 12\Z and 6∉12ℤ6 \notin 12\Z. Every prime ideal is radical: if rn∈Pr^n \in P, primality applied n−1n - 1 times gives r∈Pr \in P. The ideal II is radical if and only if the quotient ring R/IR/I is reduced. The radical J\sqrt{J} of any ideal JJ is a radical ideal.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
