Dynamical systems and ergodic theory Theorem

Raghunathan's conjecture

Builds on Lie groupLattice in a Lie groupClosureOrbit

Statement

Let GG be a connected Lie group, and let Γ\Gamma be a lattice in GG. Let HH be a connected closed subgroup of GG generated by one-parameter subgroups (ut)(u_t) such that each Ad(ut)\mathrm{Ad}(u_t) is unipotent. Then for every x∈G/Γx \in G/\Gamma there is a closed subgroup LL of GG containing HH with the following property. The closure of the orbit HxHx equals the orbit LxLx, and LxLx carries an LL-invariant probability measure.

Remarks

The statement was conjectured by M. S. Raghunathan and proved by Marina Ratner in 1991. Her proof derives it from her classification of the invariant measures of unipotent flows, one of Ratner's theorems. Before that, Margulis studied H=SO(2,1)∘H = \mathrm{SO}(2, 1)^\circ acting on SL3(ℝ)/SL3(ℤ)\mathrm{SL}_3(\R)/\mathrm{SL}_3(\Z). He proved that every relatively compact HH-orbit there is closed, and deduced the Oppenheim conjecture.

Example: for G=ℝ2G = \R^2, Γ=ℤ2\Gamma = \Z^2 and HH a line through 00 of slope α\alpha, all elements are unipotent. If α\alpha is rational, each orbit of HH on the torus is a closed circle, and L=HL = H. If α\alpha is irrational, each orbit is dense, and L=GL = G.

The unipotent hypothesis is necessary: orbits of the diagonal group in SL2(ℝ)/SL2(ℤ)\mathrm{SL}_2(\R)/\mathrm{SL}_2(\Z) can have closures that are not orbits of a subgroup.

For a student

The theorem is the topological shadow of Ratner's measure classification. It is the main tool for questions about the values of polynomials at integer points. The first such question was the Oppenheim conjecture. Let QQ be a nondegenerate indefinite real quadratic form in n≥3n \ge 3 variables, not a multiple of a form with rational coefficients. Then the values Q(ℤn)Q(\Z^n) are dense in ℝ\R. The theorem shows that orbit closures of unipotent flows behave like closures of linear flows on tori, but on noncommutative spaces.

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
