Definition

Let L/KL/K be a finite extension of algebraic number fields, with rings of integers ๐’ชKโІ๐’ชL\mathcal{O}_K \subseteq \mathcal{O}_L. Let ๐”ญ\mathfrak{p} be a nonzero prime ideal of ๐’ชK\mathcal{O}_K, and let ๐”“\mathfrak{P} be a prime ideal of ๐’ชL\mathcal{O}_L with ๐”“โˆฉ๐’ชK=๐”ญ\mathfrak{P} \cap \mathcal{O}_K = \mathfrak{p}. The ramification index e(๐”“โˆฃ๐”ญ)e(\mathfrak{P} \mid \mathfrak{p}) is the exponent of ๐”“\mathfrak{P} in the factorisation of ๐”ญ๐’ชL\mathfrak{p}\mathcal{O}_L into prime ideals of the Dedekind domain ๐’ชL\mathcal{O}_L. The prime ๐”“\mathfrak{P} is ramified over ๐”ญ\mathfrak{p} if e(๐”“โˆฃ๐”ญ)>1e(\mathfrak{P} \mid \mathfrak{p}) > 1. The prime ๐”ญ\mathfrak{p} is ramified in LL if some prime of ๐’ชL\mathcal{O}_L over ๐”ญ\mathfrak{p} is ramified, and unramified in LL otherwise.

Remarks

For number fields the residue field extensions are finite extensions of finite fields, hence separable, so no separability condition is needed. A prime number pp ramifies in a number field LL if and only if pp divides the discriminant dLd_L; in particular only finitely many primes ramify. See splitting of prime ideals for the full description of the factorisation.

Example: in L=โ„š(โˆ’5)L = \Q(\sqrt{-5}), the ideal 2๐’ชL2\mathcal{O}_L equals ๐”“2\mathfrak{P}^2 with ๐”“=(2,1+โˆ’5)\mathfrak{P} = (2, 1 + \sqrt{-5}). So e(๐”“โˆฃ2)=2e(\mathfrak{P} \mid 2) = 2 and 22 is ramified, in line with 2โˆฃdL=โˆ’202 \mid d_L = -20.

Non-example: 33 is unramified in โ„š(โˆ’5)\Q(\sqrt{-5}). Indeed x2+5โ‰ก(xโˆ’1)(x+1)(mod3)x^2 + 5 \equiv (x - 1)(x + 1) \pmod 3 has distinct roots, so 3๐’ชL=(3,โˆ’5โˆ’1)(3,โˆ’5+1)3\mathcal{O}_L = (3, \sqrt{-5} - 1)(3, \sqrt{-5} + 1) with two distinct primes, each of exponent 11; and 3โˆค203 \nmid 20.
