Definition
Let be a finite Galois extension of non-Archimedean local fields, with Galois group . Let be the valuation ring of and let be the normalized discrete valuation of , with . For an integer , the -th ramification group (in the lower numbering) is
Remarks
Each is a normal subgroup of , and . The group is the inertia group, and for large. If is the characteristic of the residue field, then is cyclic of order prime to , and is an elementary abelian -group for . If , then exactly when . Example: for and , one has and . For complex conjugation , , so and . Non-example: if is unramified and , then acts nontrivially on the residue field, so for some and . There is also an upper numbering , defined through the Herbrand function, which behaves well under quotients.
