Definition
Let be the speed of light and let be a real number with , a velocity along a fixed line. The rapidity of is where is the inverse hyperbolic tangent. Equivalently, is the unique real number with .
Remarks
Example: for , . Check: . Non-example: has no rapidity, since for every real . With and the Lorentz factor , one has and . So the boost along of the Lorentz transformation reads using the hyperbolic functions. Boosts along the same axis with rapidities and compose to the boost with rapidity , by the addition formulas for and .
