Definition
Let be a field of characteristic and let be a normal algebraic variety over (see normal scheme). Let be a resolution of singularities, that is, a proper birational morphism from a nonsingular variety . The variety has rational singularities if where are the higher direct images, computed by sheaf cohomology on preimages of open sets. A point is a rational singularity if some open neighbourhood of has rational singularities.
Remarks
The condition does not depend on the chosen resolution. Since is normal and is proper and birational, one also has , by Zariski's main theorem. Every nonsingular variety has rational singularities, with . Example: for the cone in , the blow-up of the vertex is a resolution whose exceptional curve is with normal bundle . Here is the total space of the line bundle on , and is affine, so is determined by . So the singularity is rational. Non-example: for the cone over a smooth plane cubic , the blow-up of the vertex is the total space of , and the same computation gives . The term is , so and the singularity is not rational.
