Real form
Definition
Let be a Lie algebra over , and view it also as a Lie algebra over by restriction of scalars. A real form of is a real Lie subalgebra such that as a direct sum of real vector spaces.
Remarks
Equivalently, the -linear map , , is an isomorphism of complex Lie algebras. Equivalently again, is the set of fixed points of a conjugation of : a map that is additive, satisfies , preserves brackets and has . Example: is a real form of ; it is closed under brackets, and each complex matrix of trace is uniquely with real of trace . Non-example: satisfies the direct sum condition but is not a subalgebra, since is real, where and . Real forms of Lie groups, see real form of a Lie group, have real forms of Lie algebras as their Lie algebras.
