Real form of a Lie group
Builds on Lie groupLie subgroup
Definition
Let be a complex Lie group with complex Lie algebra . A real form of is a closed real Lie subgroup of whose Lie algebra is a real form of . That is, as real vector spaces.
Remarks
Example: in . Here is the space of skew-Hermitian matrices of trace , and is the space of Hermitian matrices of trace . Each traceless complex matrix is uniquely , a skew-Hermitian plus a Hermitian traceless matrix, so .
Non-example: in for . Its Lie algebra of real antisymmetric matrices satisfies , but is the space of complex antisymmetric matrices, which misses the diagonal matrices of trace .
Often a real form is given as the fixed point group of an antiholomorphic involution of , or as an open subgroup of it. For on , the fixed points form ; for , they form . A real form that is compact is a compact real form; for a connected complex semisimple group it exists and is unique up to conjugation.
