Reciprocal lattice

Builds on Bravais lattice

Definition

Let Λ⊂ℝn\Lambda \subset \R^n be a Bravais lattice and let k⋅xk \cdot x be the standard inner product on ℝn\R^n. The reciprocal lattice of Λ\Lambda is Λ∗={k∈ℝn:eik⋅R=1 for all R∈Λ}={k∈ℝn:k⋅R∈2πℤ for all R∈Λ}.\Lambda^* = \set{k \in \R^n : e^{i k \cdot R} = 1 \text{ for all } R \in \Lambda} = \set{k \in \R^n : k \cdot R \in 2\pi\Z \text{ for all } R \in \Lambda}. If a1,…,ana_1, \dots, a_n are primitive vectors of Λ\Lambda, then Λ∗\Lambda^* is the Bravais lattice with primitive vectors b1,…,bnb_1, \dots, b_n fixed by ai⋅bj=2πδija_i \cdot b_j = 2\pi \delta_{ij}.

Remarks

In dimension 33, b1=2πa2×a3a1⋅(a2×a3)b_1 = 2\pi \dfrac{a_2 \times a_3}{a_1 \cdot (a_2 \times a_3)}, and b2,b3b_2, b_3 follow by cyclic permutation. The reciprocal of Λ∗\Lambda^* is Λ\Lambda, and the primitive cells have volumes related by V∗=(2π)n/VV^* = (2\pi)^n / V. Mathematicians often use the dual lattice {k:k⋅R∈ℤ}\set{k : k \cdot R \in \Z}, which is Λ∗\Lambda^* divided by 2π2\pi.

Example: for Λ=aℤn\Lambda = a\Z^n with a>0a > 0, Λ∗=(2π/a)ℤn\Lambda^* = (2\pi/a)\Z^n. Indeed k⋅(aej)=akj∈2πℤk \cdot (a e_j) = a k_j \in 2\pi\Z for every jj holds exactly when each kjk_j is a multiple of 2π/a2\pi/a.

Non-example: for Λ=ℤ2\Lambda = \Z^2, the vector k=(π,0)k = (\pi, 0) is not in Λ∗\Lambda^*, because k⋅(1,0)=π∉2πℤk \cdot (1, 0) = \pi \notin 2\pi\Z. The wave eiπx1e^{i\pi x_1} changes sign under the shift by (1,0)(1, 0).

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
