Reduced mass
Builds on Centre of massKinetic energy
Definition
Let and be the masses of two bodies. Their reduced mass is Equivalently, .
Remarks
Let the bodies be at , let , let be the centre of mass and let . Then the total kinetic energy splits as Check: and ; the cross terms cancel because , and the terms give . So if the force between the bodies depends only on , the relative motion obeys , the equation of one body of mass .
Example: for the Earth and the Moon, with mass ratio about , the reduced mass is about of the mass of the Moon. The formula needs both masses finite and positive; if , then , which is the case of a fixed centre. is less than , and when .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
