Reduced ring

Builds on Commutative ringNilpotent element

Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring. RR is reduced if it has no nonzero nilpotent elements. That is, for all r∈Rr \in R and all integers n≥1n \ge 1, if rn=0r^n = 0 then r=0r = 0.

Remarks

Example: ℤ/6ℤ\Z/6\Z is reduced; if rn≡0(mod6)r^n \equiv 0 \pmod 6, then 22 and 33 divide rr, so r≡0r \equiv 0. Non-example: ℤ/4ℤ\Z/4\Z is not reduced, since 22=02^2 = 0 and 2≠02 \ne 0. Equivalent forms: the nilradical of RR is zero; the zero ideal is a radical ideal; for all r∈Rr \in R, r2=0r^2 = 0 implies r=0r = 0. Every integral domain is reduced, and so is every product of integral domains. The same condition defines reduced rings that are not commutative.
