Ree groups
Description
The Ree groups are two infinite families of finite groups of Lie type, found by Rimhak Ree.
- For with , the group is the subgroup of fixed by a twisted automorphism of characteristic .
- For with , the group is the subgroup of fixed by a twisted automorphism of characteristic .
Each twisted automorphism combines the exceptional graph automorphism of the Dynkin diagram with a field automorphism. Their orders are For these groups are non-abelian simple groups.
Remarks
The construction is possible because the algebraic group in characteristic , and the algebraic group in characteristic , has an exceptional endomorphism that exchanges long and short roots. The smallest cases are not simple. has order and its commutator subgroup is , of index . has order and its commutator subgroup, of index , is the Tits group, which is simple. The Suzuki groups arise from in characteristic in the same way.
