Reeb vector field

Builds on Contact manifoldVector field

Definition

Let MM be a smooth manifold of dimension 2n+12n + 1 and let α\alpha be a contact form on MM. So α∧(dα)n\alpha \wedge (d\alpha)^n vanishes nowhere and (M,ker⁡α)(M, \ker \alpha) is a contact manifold. The Reeb vector field of α\alpha is the unique vector field RαR_\alpha on MM such that α(Rα)=1andιRαdα=0.\alpha(R_\alpha) = 1 \qquad \text{and} \qquad \iota_{R_\alpha} d\alpha = 0.

Remarks

Existence and uniqueness: dαd\alpha has rank 2n2n at each point, so its kernel is a line, and α\alpha is nonzero on this line because α∧(dα)n≠0\alpha \wedge (d\alpha)^n \ne 0. The flow of RαR_\alpha preserves α\alpha, by Cartan's formula ℒRαα=d(α(Rα))+ιRαdα=0\mathcal{L}_{R_\alpha} \alpha = d(\alpha(R_\alpha)) + \iota_{R_\alpha} d\alpha = 0. The Reeb field depends on α\alpha, not only on the contact structure: replacing α\alpha by hαh\alpha changes it in general.

Example: on ℝ3\R^3 with α=dz−y dx\alpha = dz - y\,dx, one has dα=dx∧dyd\alpha = dx \wedge dy, and Rα=∂zR_\alpha = \partial_z, since α(∂z)=1\alpha(\partial_z) = 1 and ι∂z(dx∧dy)=0\iota_{\partial_z}(dx \wedge dy) = 0. On S3⊂ℂ2S^3 \subset \C^2 with α=∑j(xj dyj−yj dxj)\alpha = \sum_j (x_j\, dy_j - y_j\, dx_j), the Reeb field is Rα=∑j(xj∂yj−yj∂xj)R_\alpha = \sum_j (x_j \partial_{y_j} - y_j \partial_{x_j}), whose flow is z↦eitzz \mapsto e^{it} z.

Non-example: on ℝ3\R^3 with α=dz−y dx\alpha = dz - y\,dx, the field ∂y\partial_y satisfies ι∂ydα=−dx≠0\iota_{\partial_y} d\alpha = -dx \ne 0 and α(∂y)=0\alpha(\partial_y) = 0, so it is not the Reeb field.
