Reflexive operator algebra
Builds on Hilbert spaceAlgebra of bounded operators on a Hilbert spaceInvariant subspace
Definition
Let be a Hilbert space and let be the algebra of bounded operators on . For a set , let be the set of closed subspaces of that are invariant under every operator in . For a set of closed subspaces of , let A subalgebra is reflexive if .
Remarks
Always , so reflexivity is the reverse inclusion. A reflexive algebra contains the identity and is closed in the weak operator topology, because each has these properties. Example: is reflexive, since and . Non-example: in , let be the matrices . Its invariant subspaces are those of , namely , and , so is the algebra of all upper triangular matrices, which is strictly larger. Every von Neumann algebra is reflexive: its invariant subspaces are the ranges of the projections in its commutant, and the bicommutant theorem gives the equality.
