Definition
Let be a simplicial complex that triangulates an -manifold, . Assign a positive length to each edge . Assume every simplex of can be realized as a simplex in Euclidean space (or Minkowski space) with these edge lengths. This makes a piecewise flat manifold. For each -simplex of (a hinge), the deficit angle is The sum runs over the -simplices containing , and is the dihedral angle of at . Regge calculus is the theory of the edge lengths with the Regge action whose field equations are for every edge .
Remarks
The action approximates the Einstein–Hilbert action , because the curvature of a piecewise flat manifold is a sum of delta functions on the hinges with . By the Schläfli identity , the field equations reduce to . Example (): the surface of a regular tetrahedron has hinges at its four vertices. At each vertex three equilateral triangles meet with angles , so . The total equals , as the Gauss–Bonnet theorem requires. Non-example: lengths on a triangle are not allowed, since they violate the triangle inequality and no flat triangle has these sides.
