Definition

Let XX be a topological space. For S⊆XS \subseteq X, write S‾\overline{S} for the closure of SS and int⁡S\operatorname{int} S for its interior. A subset U⊆XU \subseteq X is regular open if U=int⁡U‾.U = \operatorname{int} \overline{U}.

Remarks

A regular open set is open, since an interior is always open. For every open UU, one has U⊆int⁡U‾U \subseteq \operatorname{int} \overline{U}, and the set int⁡U‾\operatorname{int} \overline{U} is regular open.

Example: in ℝ\R, let U=(0,1)U = (0, 1). Then U‾=[0,1]\overline{U} = [0, 1] and int⁡[0,1]=(0,1)=U\operatorname{int} [0, 1] = (0, 1) = U, so UU is regular open.

Non-example: in ℝ\R, let U=(0,1)∪(1,2)U = (0, 1) \cup (1, 2). Then U‾=[0,2]\overline{U} = [0, 2] and int⁡U‾=(0,2)≠U\operatorname{int} \overline{U} = (0, 2) \ne U, so UU is open but not regular open.

Dually, a set FF is regular closed if F=int⁡F‾F = \overline{\operatorname{int} F}. A set is regular open if and only if its complement is regular closed.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
