Definition
Let be Minkowski space with inertial coordinates and , where is the speed of light. Relativistic mechanics of a point particle is the following model.
- A particle of mass is a future-directed timelike world line , parametrised by proper time .
- Its four-velocity is , so , and its four-momentum is .
- A force on the particle is a four-vector along the world line with , called the four-force.
- The equation of motion is
Remarks
In an inertial frame write , and for a three-force . Then the equation of motion becomes and , because . Example: a free particle has , so is constant and the world line is a straight line; with it gives . Non-example: a four-vector with is not an admissible force, because would change the value , and so the mass. For small speeds , and the first equation reduces to Newton's second law .
