Definition
Let be a set of coupling constants, each defining a Hamiltonian of a lattice system on . For , let be the partition function on a box of sites. Let be the free energy per site, up to the factor , and the correlation length in lattice units. Let be a multiplicative semigroup of real numbers that contains . A renormalization group is a family of maps , for , such that:
- is the identity and ;
- there is a function on with , so that ;
- , where is the correlation length.
Each is a renormalization group transformation.
Remarks
A point with is a fixed point, and clause 3 forces or . Critical points flow to fixed points with .
Example: decimation of the Ising chain with coupling at zero field, for . Summing over a spin between and gives with and . So , which is clause 2. Since , the new coupling has , which is clause 3. The fixed points are and , and every flows to .
Non-example: the identity map taken as fails clause 3 at every with , since .
In practice is constructed by block spins or by integrating out momentum shells, and it is usually only approximate, because new couplings appear at each step.
