Definition
Let be a locally small category and let be the category of sets. A functor is representable if there are an object of and a natural isomorphism . A natural isomorphism is a natural transformation whose components are all bijections. A functor is representable if there are an object and a natural isomorphism . Here and are the hom functors, and is called a representing object.
Remarks
A representation is determined by the element , called a universal element. The pair represents exactly when for every object and every there is a unique with .
Example: the contravariant power set functor sends to its set of subsets and to the preimage map . It is represented by : a function corresponds to the subset , and this bijection commutes with preimages.
Non-example: the constant functor with value the empty set is not representable. For every set the set contains , so it is not in bijection with .
