Definition

Let ๐€\mathbf{A} be an algebra and let ๐\mathbf{B} be a subalgebra of ๐€\mathbf{A} with universe BB. The subalgebra ๐\mathbf{B} is a retract of ๐€\mathbf{A} when there is a homomorphism rโ€‰โฃ:๐€โ†’๐r \colon \mathbf{A} \to \mathbf{B} with r(b)=br(b) = b for all bโˆˆBb \in B. Such a map rr is called a retraction.

Remarks

Up to isomorphism, an algebra ๐‚\mathbf{C} is a retract of ๐€\mathbf{A} when there are homomorphisms sโ€‰โฃ:๐‚โ†’๐€s \colon \mathbf{C} \to \mathbf{A} and rโ€‰โฃ:๐€โ†’๐‚r \colon \mathbf{A} \to \mathbf{C} with rโˆ˜s=idโกCr \circ s = \id_C. Then ss is injective and s(๐‚)s(\mathbf{C}) is a retract of ๐€\mathbf{A} in the sense above.

Example: in the group โ„คร—โ„ค\Z \times \Z, the subgroup โ„คร—{0}\Z \times \set{0} is a retract. The map r(m,n)=(m,0)r(m, n) = (m, 0) is a homomorphism onto โ„คร—{0}\Z \times \set{0} and fixes each (m,0)(m, 0).

Non-example: the subgroup 2โ„ค2\Z of โ„ค\Z is not a retract. A homomorphism rโ€‰โฃ:โ„คโ†’2โ„คr \colon \Z \to 2\Z is determined by x=r(1)โˆˆ2โ„คx = r(1) \in 2\Z, and then r(2)=2xr(2) = 2x. The condition r(2)=2r(2) = 2 forces x=1โˆ‰2โ„คx = 1 \notin 2\Z.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
