Definition
Let be a pseudo-Riemannian manifold with curvature (see Riemann curvature tensor). The Ricci curvature of is the -tensor field defined, for and , by the trace of the linear map , .
Remarks
If is a -orthonormal basis of in the Riemannian case, then , and for a unit vector this gives , a sum of sectional curvatures. In coordinates, where . The Ricci tensor is symmetric, by the first Bianchi identity.
Example: on the unit sphere , , whose trace in is , so .
Non-example: is a different trace, and it is identically zero because is skew-adjoint; it is not the Ricci curvature.
A metric with for a constant is an Einstein metric.
